Introduction
Wanshouyan National Archaeological Site Park is an important cultural and historical attraction located in Yanqian town, Sanquan district, Sanming, Fujian province, China. It is renowned for its significant Paleolithic archaeological discoveries that provide insight into early human activity in the region. This site is particularly famous for its rich archaeological findings, with at least three of the 20 caves in the limestone peak containing significant artifacts.
Archaeological Significance
The Wanshouyan site has unearthed more than 800 stone artifacts and mammal bones. These discoveries span four geological periods, proving the existence of human activity in the area as early as 200,000 years ago. The site is made up of two crucial components: the Chuanfan cave site and the Lingfeng cave site.
Chuanfan Cave Site
Chuanfan cave has yielded a variety of Paleolithic relics, such as stone tools and mammal fossils, as well as artifacts from more recent historical periods. Among these are blue and white porcelain fragments, blue bricks, and temple remnants dating back to the Song (960-1279) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The discovery of rare remains of 30,000-year-old pebble floors and drainage grooves is particularly noteworthy, offering unique insights into the ancient inhabitants' way of life and architectural practices.
Lingfeng Cave Site
Lingfeng cave holds the distinction of being the oldest Paleolithic site in East China. It has provided groundbreaking evidence of early human presence through the unearthing of stone knives, scraping devices, and hammering tools dating back 180,000 to 200,000 years.
